To the Yale Community:

I write to let you know that an attempted robbery occurred this evening at Chapel and Dwight Streets at approximately 7:10 PM (Click here to view the incident's location).   A graduate student was walking when he was approached by three males, one of whom assaulted him and attempted to rob him of his cell phone.  No weapons were displayed and no injuries were reported. The New Haven Police are investigating.

If you have any information about this incident or should observe any suspicious activity, please call the Yale Police at 203-432-4400 or text your anonymous tip to 67283; begin the stream with yaletip.

While the attempted robbery tonight was unsuccessful, it is important to take precautions, especially as the warmer spring weather arrives.  Be aware of your surroundings at all times, and avoid walking while listening to music, texting, or talking on a phone. Walk or jog with others whenever possible, in well-populated and well-lit areas.  Never display valuables, jewelry, or cash openly, and remember that phones can be a particular target for thieves.

It is a good idea to note the location of emergency Blue Phones along your route. Make use of security services, including shuttle services and door-to-door rides at night, by calling 203-432-9255.

Sincerely,

Ronnell A. Higgins, Chief of Police
